‘The Origins of the Creative Self’ Presented by Professor Louise Newman AND ‘Attachment, Adjustment and Achievement in Intellectually Gifted Children’ Presented by Mimi Wellisch AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM – 25 SEPTEMBER 2010 9.30 AM – 12.30 PM Louise Newman is the Professor of Developmental Psychiatry and Director of the Monash University Centre for Developmental Psychiatry & Psychology. Prior to this appointment she was the Chair of Perinatal and Infant Psychiatry at the University of Newcastle and the previous Director of the New South Wales Institute of Psychiatry. Louise is a practising infant psychiatrist with expertise in the area of disorders of early parenting and attachment difficulties in infants. She has undertaken research into the issues confronting parents with histories of early trauma and neglect. Her current research is focussing on the evaluation of infant-parent interventions in high-risk populations, the concept of parental reflective functioning in mothers with borderline personality disorder and the neurobiology of parenting disturbance. Louise has published in the areas of infant mental health, attachment disorders trauma, and prevention of child abuse. Louise is co-author of the textbook Clinical Skills in Infant Mental Health and the forthcoming Contemporary Approaches in Child and Adolescent Mental health, She is the Convenor of the Alliance of Health Professions for Asylum Seekers and an advocate for the rights of asylum seekers and refugees. She is the Chair of the Detention Expert Health Advisory Group an independent body providing advice to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship on the health needs of asylum seekers. Louise has been involved in research into the impact of immigration detention on child asylum seekers. Louise is the current President of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. Mimi Wellisch is an early childhood educator and a registered psychologist. She entered the teaching profession as a mature student, having discovered how passionately she felt about her own children’s educational experiences. Mimi has taught in many areas of early childhood over a 25 year period, including in a multi-cultural centre and preschools both in Sydney and country NSW. Her later work also includes school counselling, supervision of tertiary early childhood students and licensing and monitoring children’s services for an 8 year period as a Children’s Services Adviser. Mimi has a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood from and a Master of Early Childhood from Macquarie University, as well as a Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma of Psychology (with Distinction). Her unique combination of backgrounds in both early childhood and psychology gives her a special vista into the world of gifted children. Mimi is the author of a number of books and articles, has presented at many local and international conferences, and conducted workshops on a variety of topics. She is also the Director of Clever Kids Consultancy, a service for gifted children and their families. Mimi is currently enrolled in PhD studies at Macquarie University, and the topic of her research explores the connection between attachment and gifted children. Download Registration PDF |
