About Training

The Australia and New Zealand Association of Psychotherapy was formed to advance psychotherapy and psychotherapy training in Australia and New Zealand. Since 1990 ANZAP has provided continuous courses in Sydney and from time to time in other centres. The core of the training is the Conversational Model, an integrated psychoanalytic process model, which has Sydney as its main centre of development under the leadership of Professor Russell Meares at the University of Sydney and ANZAP.

Published research on the Conversational Model has proven its effectiveness in treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder; individual case studies have shown its value in other disorders that present for psychotherapeutic treatment.

About the Course
This comprehensive training program is offered as a three year part-time course. The program has theoretical and clinical strands, with intensive group and individual supervision of the trainee’s own case material through audio-recordings and process notes. The seminar and group supervision program follow the academic year, while the individual supervision which commences in second year is maintained throughout the year.

The focus is on the individual development of each trainee. Opportunity to develop skills in psychotherapy presentation and writing is provided. Participation in ANZAP activities at Saturday Morning Seminars, Annual Conference and Annual live-in Retreat is a part of the training and introduces the trainees to a collegial experience for ongoing practice and development as therapists. The objective of the training is that candidates will develop as ethical, individual psychotherapists and as an important resource for the treatment of certain forms of mental illness. A comprehensive summary of the course is available on this website.

Course Application
ANZAP welcomes applications from mental health professionals who wish to extend their skills in psychotherapy. Suitable applicants will be invited for interview and selection into the course. The course fee structure is detailed in the comprehensive course information.
